As part of their science programme, Little Ducks have been investigating volcanos.

They have read books about volcanos and watched a short video about them. They even listened to a song about volcanos called “We Lava You”.

The grand finale was seeing their own volcano erupt with smoke and lava.

Year 9 Student Development Week at British International School, Phuket (BISP) kicked off on Monday 14 November with a day of environmental awareness.

Click here to view the Facebook photo album

Teams of students worked throughout the morning to research a given area of environmental concern, which included topics such as air pollution, landfill sites and food wastage.

They were then tasked with organising a stall at the afternoon’s Environment Fair, which was attended by over 100 Primary students from Years 3 and 5.

The Secondary students were excellent in teaching their younger peers about the issues that we and the next generations increasingly face, and they also effectively educated students about the possible ways that we can all help to minimise our impact as humans on our environment.

Interactive games and presentations were also devised by many students to effectively convey these messages.

Students’ team working, communication and organisational skills were honed throughout the day and all thoroughly enjoyed the challenge.

BISP juniors shine at ranking tennis tournament

Well done to Ken Nakinishi from the BISP RPT Tennis Academy, who competed in his first ranking event at last weekend’s Krasea ranking event for players aged eight and under, narrowly losing out in the first round to a more experienced opponent in a super tiebreaker 12-10 after going one set each. A great effort on his first time out.

Fellow academy player Birdy did extremely well again and found himself in the final against an older opponent that he lost to last time 4-1, 4-1.

This time Birdy showed his fast improvement but just missed out on first spot losing 5-4, 5-4 in a tough match that even saw a rally of over 50 shots.

BISP RPT Tennis Academy Head Coach Lee Austrin said, “The BISP youngsters are really improving fast and playing above their years, and it is only a matter of time before the results follow! Well done to our young players.”

Year 12 are completing their Group 4 Experimental Science project this week as part of Secondary student development week.

The Group 4 project involves students from all the different IB Science disciplines (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Systems and Design Technology) working collaboratively on a research question of their choice, based on a chosen theme. The theme for this year’s project is survival.

Students will display their work in the MTB lobby period 5 (1:35 – 2:35) tomorrow (Friday 18th November).

Please feel free to come along and talk to the students who will be happy to present and explain their findings to you. We are particularly keen for Year 12 to have to explain their results to a variety of audiences of different ages, as they are being assessed on their communication and presentation skills.

BISP Over 15 boys win PISAC football tournament

Report by Captain Francis Hosking

On 16 November the BISP Cruzeiro Football Academy Over 15 boys team played in the newly organised PISAC (Phuket Island Sports Athletic Conference) football tournament at HeadStart. Firstly I would like to say a massive thank you from my team to all the schools for organising and inviting us to the competition.

The level of football, from my 15 years in Phuket, has improved massively amongst the international schools over the recent years, and this tough competition is definitely what we were missing in Phuket.

The tournament consisted of three teams: UWC Thailand, host school HeadStart, and BISP Cruzeiro. I know in the coming years, the level and number of schools at this competition will grow and I am proud to be one of the first to play in it. The tournament itself was challenging and we played well in both our games, winning first place.

The sportsmanship and commitment from all the players was outstanding and the tournament was carried out in a professional fashion. I would once again like to say a massive thank you to the coaches, fans and players for making this tournament one to remember – now for the BISP Soccer Sevens!
