Sunshine and great action at U18 tennis competition

Thank you to all players who attended the Boys and Girls U18 tennis competition on Saturday 1 October. The sunshine gave us some great tennis, with every player contributing to some really enjoyable matches.

Some of the highlights included Michael versus Vichi in the round robin, Hugo winning a tight shootout tiebreak with Hayden to reach the semis, and a solid Max just edging a battling Wil to make the final.

In the girls competition, Tara met Cosie in the final for the second time that morning. After winning a marathon group game (8-7), Cosie showed great mental strength once again to win a tight match on a tiebreak 6-5 (7-1) to clinch the tournament. Congratulations Cosie!

The boys final showcased the skills of Max and Vichi, with both playing some fantastic tennis worthy of a final. Max’s consistency of heavy ground strokes were great to watch, but it was Vichi, with a 6-4 win, who showed everyone watching what a special talent he is, and at still so young surely a bright future awaits.

U18 Girls winner: Cosie

U18 Boys winner: Vichi

Former British International School, Phuket (BISP) pupil and 2016 IB Graduate Michael Sunguza has been using his time wisely before he starts his American university course in January.

Michael studied HL Music as part of his IB Diploma and was so inspired by the “creating” or composing component that he has continued to compose on his return to his home in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He is using Mixcraft Pro Studio 7 as his composing software.

Michael explains what he has been doing in his own words: “I have been working in my dad’s company as a stock manager. I also do a lot of composing on the side as well. Since graduating from BISP I have composed four pieces in total so far.”

Click below or here to listen to Michael’s composition Ascension:

“I started sending the pieces around and was lucky enough to be given a job as a composer for a women’s sportswear advertisement. As well as being a fun and productive use of my time before university, I also believe that it is good preparation for what I hope will be a successful career in music as a composer.”

BISP Head of Performing Arts Paulette Wilkinson says, “We wish Michael continued success with his compositional endeavours, and maybe will we see his name in film credits in the future!”

At the recent Thailand Short Course Swimming Championships 2016, held 1-3 October at Assumption University’s Aquatic Centre in Bangkok, the BISP Swim Academy from British International School, Phuket (BISP) finished third overall on points score, but first in average points score, with only 12 swimmers competing in just two days of a three day competition.

The championships were the selection trials for the Thai national team for the 13th FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) being held 6-11 December in Windsor, Ontario.

Three BISP Swim Academy records (and personal bests) were broken at the meet, namely: Raine Gavino in the 200 Breaststroke with 2.32.36; Hendrik Faber in the 400 Freestyle with 3.59.41; and Kimiko Raheem in the 100 Backstroke with 1.02.47 – Kimiko has already been pre-selected for the World Short Course Championships by the Sri Lankan national team.

“I am happy with the way we performed up in Bangkok considering we’re still in pre-season training and not focusing on major weeks for another six weeks,” says BISP Swim Academy Head Coach Colin Braund. “This was more of a training meet for the guys to lift and swim personal best times, and assess where we’re at with our training. They showed a lot of professionalism in their attitude, and now should be looking to build on their performances.”

nicholle-toh

Elsewhere in Asia, the BISP Swim Academy’s Nicholle Toh broke three more Academy records at the Beijing leg of the FINA World Cup series, where she was representing her home nation of Singapore, in the 50 Butterfly (27.78), 100 Butterfly (1.01.02), and 200 Butterfly (2.15.76). After the racing in Beijing, she was continuing on to the Dubai then Doha legs of the FINA World Cup, before returning back to BISP to continue training. In November, she will be competing for Singapore at the 10th Asian Swimming Championships in Tokyo.

“It’s invaluable for her to gain international competitive experience at these types of events,” says Head Coach Braund about Toh’s recent meets, “especially for such a young swimmer, with Nicholle having only just turned 15. Her recent races in Hawaii, China and the Middle East will stand her in good stead for the upcoming Asian swim championships in Tokyo.”

BISP Athletics Director Jeff LaMantia and Headmaster Neil Richards

The BISP Swim Academy at British International School, Phuket won the Silver Award for Best Sports Youth Academy of the Year in Thailand at the 2016 SPIA Asia – Sports Industry Awards in Bangkok on Tuesday 4 October.

The winners were announced at a black tie gala dinner on Tuesday evening in Bangkok attended by more than 300 sports professionals from around the region. Following a rigorous judging process and a record 208 entries, winners were awarded in 17 categories recognising excellence of events, organizations, and academies across 17 Asian countries.

Speaking at the Gala Dinner and Awards ceremony in Bangkok, Mr Didier Brun, Deputy CEO of organiser Sport360 said, “The Asian Sports Industry Awards has grown this year – a clear sign of the industry’s health. It’s encouraging to see such a large number of entries, but what is even more encouraging is the quality of those entries.

Twenty independent judges, each a leader in their field, undertook a thorough judging process and after many hours identified winners across 17 categories representing the best-of-the-best in the Asian sports industry.”

After the initial round of judging, 72 Thai entries were short-listed across the 17 categories and claimed five Gold, five Silver and five Bronze awards, with the BISP Swim Academy pipped by Chelsea Soccer School for the category’s top prize.

Along with BISP Headmaster Neil Richards, BISP Athletics Director Jeff LaMantia was at the ceremony in Bangkok to accept the award on behalf of the school, and he had this to say about their experience: “It was an incredible night, and an inspiration for the BISP Swim Academy to be recognised alongside all these famous organizations, clubs and academies.

“While we are disappointed not to have taken Gold, we are still proud of coming a close second out of 15 entrants, and would like to thank all the hard work put in by our swimmers and our coaches: Head Coach Colin Braund and Hayley Palmer. Recognition must also go to ex-Head Coach Simon Jones, who was instrumental in laying the foundation for the continuing success of the BISP Swim Academy, before he took over as coach of the Thai national swimming team.

“Next year we’re going for gold!”

The BISP Cruzeiro Football Academy High Performance U14 and U12 boys teams recently took part in the PSS National Tournament, held at Thanyapura. Both teams performed well, especially because it was the first time that they had played competitively this school year.

The U14s played six games over two days and won all six, scoring 31 goals and conceding none. The U12s played seven games, winning four, drawing one, and losing one, scoring 10 goals and conceding five.

After the first couple of games both teams started to get into an effective game pace and understand their positional play and functions on the pitch. The highlight of the first day was the U14s 8-0 victory over Gwyn FC. After playing many hard games both teams finished in second place at the end of the first day.

The second day started with the U12s beating Youth Football Home 2-0, and the U14s putting 10 goals past DTHHSA. After two days of action, the U12 boys finished with a very respectable fourth place, and the U14s finished first.

“It was a fantastic weekend of football and a wonderful learning experience for all our boys involved,” says BISP Cruzeiro Football Academy Head Coach Jonathas Candido.

“We still have a lot of work to do running up to the BISP Soccer Sevens in November, but there is a great potential and hopefully, if the weather behaves itself, we can put on a great performance.”

The weather was less than ideal during the warm-up, but by the time the race started the skies had cleared and the temperature was great for racing.

The flat 10km course left the island and crossed over the Sarasin bridge, adding some steps to spice things up. Crossing back over the bridge had the 10K and 5K race racers running side by side for the last three kilometres.

The course was on the road with only a few minutes of rain and there were some fast times. According to the hosts there was an astounding 2600 runners.

Hendrik Faber made his appearance for BISP placing 6th overall in the 10km, and the BISP community again showed up in large numbers with some more ambitions runners deciding to ride their bike to the race and then home again, in some cases adding an additional 60 kilometre ride to a 10 kilometre running race.

Thanks to Nicola Lowry and the event organisers for the photos, and well done all who participated!

From the 20 young players competing to be crowned champion, it was Tim, Bow, Max, Cameron, Birdy, Mila, Chanon and Eloise who made it to the quarterfinals. Playing exceptionally well to make it through 4 very strong round robin groups full of talented and dedicated players.

After winning their quarters, Tim and Max faced off in the first semifinal, with Birdy and Eloise competing hard in the second semi. After impressive tennis by all, it was Tim and Birdy who made it through to contest the final, which turned out to be a classic!

As both players played hard for the win, but with true spirit and respect for their opponent, it was Tim who shouted with joy as he won the final point to win a close match 6-4. As the two players shook hands at the net, it was the talented Birdy who was first to congratulate the champion.

Congratulations to both Tim and Birdy for a great final, together with all the players for making their parents (and coaches) really proud! To all the coaches and Star Secondary players who worked so hard, thank you very very much! And to all the parents, none of this could have been done without your support, thank you so much!

BISP student Jacky Yao with Head of Mathematics Tim Parkes

On Wednesday 12 October, British International School, Phuket (BISP) awarded its first ever Bronze Medal for the Junior Mathematical Olympiad to student Jacky Yao.

This result places Jacky in the top 210 out of about 200,000 pupils – or in the top 0.1% who took the UKMT Junior Maths challenge.

This is a remarkable achievement considering that this is a worldwide maths challenge and that the total number of students taking the three UKMT maths challenges is roughly 600,000 students worldwide from over 4,000 school and colleges.

The UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) is a registered charity whose aim is to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics. The UKMT organises national mathematics competitions and other mathematical enrichment activities for 11-18 year old UK school pupils.
