The BISP U15 3 on 3 basketball team are hoping to defend the U15 girls title this year.
From 15-16 March, more than 200 athletes from across Asia will take part in the British International School, Phuket 3 on 3 U13 and U15 International Basketball tournament.
The tournament will feature 14 schools from Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand. As well as a staggering 210 games played over two days, the tournament will also include an individual skills challenge, a shooting contest and a dynamic breakdancing performance by Power Storm Crew.
Despite being around for decades, the wave of popularity surrounding 3 on 3 basketball is being felt worldwide. The game is played on a smaller court but the arc, free-throw line, and keyhole measure the same as a traditional court. The size of the ball is also smaller to allow for better control.

Tournament organiser, Jamie Blake, says even though 3 on 3 has its roots in urban America, Asia has been a driving force behind the growth of the game and its recent inclusion in major multi-sports. Next year it will make its debut at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
“As a child, I spent countless hours outside playing 3 on 3. The benefits of the game are huge. It’s fast paced and because players handle the ball more, it enables them to develop their skills faster. But ultimately, it’s a team game and a great spectator sport.”
Mr Blake says BISP students have really taken to the 3 on 3 format and the game is becoming an increasingly popular break-time, afterschool and evening activity.
“Our outdoor basketball court is a busy place at the moment. Students of all ages are getting real enjoyment out of meeting up with friends and playing the half court game,” he comments.
