With swimmers from Little Ducks all the way to Year 13, the BISP Flying Fish programme continues to garner a large following at BISP.
The coaching team started off the term by teaching 68 children, aged 9-15, from BanYa Literacy Centre basic water safety and survival skills. With the support of some parents, students and staff, the students – many of whom had never been in a swimming pool – were able to learn essential life skills that will help them and their community be safer in the water.
This week marked the first racing opportunity of the year for our team, with club champs taking place at the 25m pool on Thursday. Athletes from Swordfish right up to High Performance team took part in breaststroke and butterfly events, and there was even an unofficial national record for Nepalese swimmer Diana Lama. It is fantastic to see how much our swimmers are enjoying themselves as they work toward the final prize giving at the end of the year.
Learn to Swim continues to be an enjoyable and rewarding activity for all students and coaches involved, and many of the primary students are working hard to improve their strokes and skills. With an emphasis on how they swim, rather than how fast they can go, the swimmers are continuously learning and challenging themselves, and judging by their smiles they are enjoying it too. This term’s swim league event will be on March 23 at 2pm.
Swimmers in Narwhals and Kraken have been working on being more accountable in their training and effort in practice, and improving on things like consistent attendance and race skills. The coaches have seen big improvements in understanding, attitude and application, and look forward to rewarding swimmers for their efforts throughout the term.
The High Performance team has been training hard after a successful first term, and are now looking ahead to their training camp in Chiang Mai over the half-term break. In early March, many will be travelling to the Malaysian Age Group Nationals, and looking to qualify for a variety of International events later in the year, including the Junior World Championships and SEA Games. Other upcoming International events include Singapore Age Groups, Lithuanian Age and Open, and Malaysian Open.
