This weekend, five BISP RPT Tennis Academy players took part in the Grade 4 100Plus competition in Surat Thani.
The competition had some of the top ranked players in Thailand including the No. 2 Under 16 boy, No. 1 Under 12 boy, and two players inside the Top 8 Under 10.
Saturday morning went well with Anzac, Vichi and Chathu all winning convincingly to reach the quarter finals. In the afternoon Anzac faced the No. 1 player Under 12 who proved too strong beating Anzac 4-1, 4-0.
Also in the afternoon it was very unfortunate to see two of our players drawn to play each other in Hugo and Kevin. In very windy conditions Kevin came through 6-0, 6-1.
Sunday was semi-final and final day and begun with Vichi facing a tricky opponent, after a sluggish start Vichi came through 5-3, 4-2 to make the final. Chathu was to face a very good opponent from Bangkok, playing very smartly to out think his opponent. Chathu came through 4-2, 4-2 to also make the final.
Kevin was to face a player he had met on several occassions before and always having close matches. Today wasn’t Kevins day and he eventually went down 7-5, 7-5 in a hard fought match.
The afternoon first saw Vichi playing the 10 & Under final, producing some great tennis; Vichi won comfortably 4-2, 4-1. Next up was Chathu to face the No. 1 ranked player and also the player that had beaten him two weeks earlier.
However, this time was very different and with the right tactics and mental strength Chathu over powered and out thought his opponent convincingly with a 4-0, 4-2 victory to take the title.
BISP RPT Tennis Academy Head Coach Lee Austrin says, “At these events it is very nice to see how far our players have come in such a short space of time. Also it is very pleasing to see by far everybody has superior technique, a game plan and great spirit.”
“When I go to these events it reminds me of how important it is to get the basics right at a young age and to always use the correct equipment and balls for the level and size of the player.
“Only three years ago both Chathu and Vichi were using the red and orange ball with me in the UK to hone their technique and tactics to ensure they had a good base for the future. Now they are starting to get the rewards not only with good technique but playing in the correct way.
“Anybody looking to get their child into tennis at a young age should look at getting the basics right, and not look to cut corners or rush youngsters into competition too early.”
