Six year-old British International School, Phuket (BISP) student Tarita Hongsyok (Ig), competed in her first ever ranking event last weekend at the Krasea Tennis Camp Junior Challenge in Bangkok.
In the 8 & Under event there were 2 girls ranked in the top 7 in Thailand. In the first round a nervous Ig started slowly but soon found her feet and managed to progress 4-2, 4-2. After reaching the semi-final round Ig was to face the no. 7 ranked girl in Thailand.
Starting well Ig took the first set 4-2 but her opponent played more consistently in the second set to take it also 4-2, this meant the girls must play a championship tie-breaker to decide who would reach the final. In a very close encounter Ig showed great mental strength to come through 10-8.
In the final she was up against the no. 5 ranked girl in Thailand, this was clearly a step up for Ig and maybe a step too far at this stage. She put in a great fight, taking many games to sudden death deuce but eventually coming runner up 4-1, 4-1.
Overall this was a great achievement from Ig in her first ever ranking event and also playing girls 2 years elder to her. All the coaches are very proud of her performances and plan big things for Ig over the next couple of years. Watch this space!
