Eight CAS students visited Cambodia to volunteer their time and energy to help children learn English and to view the new classrooms that were being built through the fund raising they had initiated.
In September 2017 CAS students began to fund raise in order to build two new classrooms for a rural village school in Cambodia. Using their innovation and enthusiasm they raised 1995 USD. This was then added to by a very generous donation from the Rainbow Shake Soccer 7s stand. Project Restart had agreed to match fund the total amount raised which took phase two fund raising activities to a grand total of $4552. This money was combined with other funds raised during phase one which included donations from:
– BIS Class 10B (2016)
– Glenfall Primary School Cheltenham and the Wide Valley Singers Gloucester
– Sea Breeze Phuket School Quiz (2016)
– British International School Under 11 and 9 girls football squads (2016)
– Several personal/business contributions.

The classrooms are now under construction – they will be completed in the next week. Our amazing students spent two days at the village. The trip consisted of:
Day 1:
A very early flight followed by a bicycle tour around the village to understand the culture and lifestyle of Cambodia. After a traditional lunch in the village the students then planned and delivered English classes for 60 Cambodian children from the village.
Day 2:
Another early start to watch the sun rise over Angkor Wat then lunch at the village. The students then planned and delivered another afternoon of school activities for the Cambodian children. All of the trip costs were 100% personally covered by the students or teachers and 100% of the funds raised have gone directly to the costs of the classroom build. Once again, our BIS students demonstrated that they are truly world class. Behind the scenes the fund raising was supported by several key CAS students; some of which did not come on the trip but without their efforts the building would not have been possible. The students that volunteered for the trip were outstanding. It was not easy having a go at teaching English for the first time to a group of Cambodian children who had very limited English. A massive achievement for all involved.
