The Reception class students had an enjoyable trip to Vanich Farm in the morning of 23rd May. The focus of the trip was to learn more about where food comes from. They had the opportunity to explore the farm’s herb garden, learning about what the herbs are used for before planting a lemongrass plant.

Having wandered through the cornfields and tasted sweet corn fresh from the plants, the students learnt how to turn corn into corn milk. The delicious, sweet, all natural milk was thoroughly enjoyed by almost all! After this quick refreshment stop it was back to work and time to learn about how rice is grown. Not afraid to get a little dirty, our young and eager farmers were more than willing to lend a hand and help plant rice plants in the rice paddy. There was just enough time to stop off and meet a few of the resident animals before heading back to school.

After looking at how much hard work goes into farming the foods we eat, we hope the students will continue to try some new foods and think carefully reception class farm trip about their food choices so as not to waste it at mealtimes. Any leftover fruits and vegetables are now being deposited in our Early Years compost bins, where we hope it will turn into compost for our plants. The lemongrass plants have now been transplanted into our own garden and our eager farmers have continued to tend to our Early Years rice paddy. We are hoping to harvest our very first rice crop very soon!
